When Old Drainage Lines Fail: Trenching and Retrenching
Buried pipe does not last forever. When an old drainage line stops carrying water, the fix usually means opening the ground again. Here is what trenching and retrenching involve.

Buried drainage lines do their work invisibly, sometimes for decades, and then one spring the water stops moving. The downspout line backs up at the elbow, the French drain quits, or a corner of the yard floods for the first time in years. When an old line fails, the fix usually means opening the ground again. That is trenching and retrenching work, and this post explains what both involve.
What a Proper Trench Involves
A trench for a drainage line has one purpose: hold pipe at the depth and pitch that keep water moving by gravity. Every part of that can be done wrong. The trench has to be deep enough for the job the pipe does, the bottom has to fall continuously toward the outlet, the pipe needs stone bedding under it rather than raw dirt, and the backfill has to go back in compacted lifts so the surface does not sink into a trough over the line.
Gravity lines have no pump to bail them out. If a run holds even one stretch of flat or backward pitch, water slows there, silt drops out of the slowed water, and the line begins to choke at exactly that spot. This is why we cut every run on our trenching jobs to a checked grade instead of trusting the eye.
How Buried Lines Fail
Crushed or collapsed pipe. Old lines, especially thin-walled corrugated pipe, get crushed by vehicles, settling soil, or one unlucky rock. Everything upstream of the crush point backs up.
Root intrusion. Tree roots find the water inside a pipe and grow into joints and perforations. A rooted line strangles slowly, draining a little worse each year.
Silt and sediment. Lines installed without fabric protection, or with poor pitch, fill with fine soil over the years until there is no room left for the water.
A run that never had enough fall. Some lines were built flat, or close to it, and drained poorly from day one. No repair to one spot fixes a run that was never pitched correctly.
Age by itself plays a part. Pipe materials and installation practices have improved, and plenty of older properties around Morris County still carry the lines that went in when the house was built. A run that has been slowing quietly for years often shows up first as a water problem somewhere else on the property.

The Signs an Old Line Has Quit
Failed lines announce themselves at the surface. A downspout that overflows at the bottom elbow in moderate rain means the buried line it feeds is blocked. A wet stripe or a sunken trough tracing a straight path through the lawn often marks a broken run leaking into the soil around it.
There are quieter signs too. An area the old French drain used to keep dry goes soggy again, which means the drain has stopped collecting or stopped discharging. Water backs out of a pop-up emitter or a yard grate that used to flow, which points at a blockage downstream of it. The pattern is worth watching over a few storms, because one overflow in a downpour can just be volume, while the same overflow in moderate rain points at a blocked line.
What Retrenching Involves
Retrenching means re-digging a line that already exists. We open the old run, find what killed it, and rebuild the trench so the replacement lasts: correct depth, continuous fall, new pipe on stone bedding, filter fabric where the line collects groundwater, and compacted backfill on top. The surface gets restored when we leave, from lawn to gravel to asphalt.
Finding the cause matters as much as replacing the pipe. A line crushed by vehicle traffic gets rebuilt to survive that traffic. A rooted line gets rerouted away from the tree, or rebuilt with solid pipe through the root zone. A silted line gets the fabric and bedding it never had. Replacing pipe without answering why the old pipe died sets up the same failure a few years out.

Repair One Spot or Redo the Run
Sometimes a single crush point really is the whole problem, and a short dig fixes it. We look for that first, because it is the smaller job. But the same conditions that broke one section usually worked on the entire run. Pipe from the same era, in the same soil, under the same traffic tends to be in the same shape. When we open a line and find the material failing along its length, patching one spot buys a season, and we will tell you which situation we found before any decision gets made.
The Mark-Out Comes First
Every dig on the property, new trench or re-dig, starts with the New Jersey one-call utility mark-out, which state law requires before the ground is opened. The paint and flags locate the gas, electric, water, and communication lines so the trench route can be planned around them. We call the mark-out in as a matter of routine on every excavating job, and no bucket goes in the ground before it is done.
Old drainage lines themselves rarely appear on any map, which is part of the trade. We trace them from the surface evidence: the downspout connections, the grates, the discharge points, and the trough lines in the lawn.
