French Drain, Trench Drain, or Regrade: How to Choose
A French drain, a trench drain, and a regrade solve three different water problems. Matching the fix to the symptom is most of the job, and this guide walks through how.

Ask three contractors about the same wet yard and you can get three different answers. One proposes a French drain, one suggests a trench drain, and one says the yard needs regrading. None of them is automatically wrong. The three fixes solve three different water problems, and the right choice depends on which problem your property has.
Here is what each one does, in plain terms, and how to match the fix to what you see in your own yard.
A French Drain Collects Water Out of the Soil
A French drain is perforated pipe set in a stone-filled trench and wrapped in filter fabric. Water sitting in the surrounding soil seeps through the stone, enters the pipe, and rides gravity to a discharge point away from the problem area.
It is the right tool when the problem is water in the ground: a lawn that stays spongy for days after rain, a wet band across the yard where subsurface water travels, or soil loading water against a basement wall. It is the wrong tool for water racing across the surface, because most of that flow passes over the trench before it can soak in.
Placement decides everything with these systems. The run has to pass through the wet ground itself and hold continuous fall to its outlet, which is why the trenching behind a French drain gets cut to a checked depth and grade rather than eyeballed. A drain routed around the wet zone, or laid flat, collects little and clogs early.
A Trench Drain Intercepts Water Crossing a Surface
A trench drain is a narrow channel with a grate, set flush into pavement, that catches water moving across it and sends the flow into buried pipe. If rain runs down the driveway and under the garage door, or a walkway turns into a stream during storms, this is the fix built for that job. The channel sits across the path of the water and cuts it off before it reaches what you are protecting.
Trench drains are surface tools. They do nothing for soggy soil, and they only earn their keep where water genuinely crosses the grate. A trench drain placed where the water does not travel collects nothing. The grate also needs to stay clear, since leaves and grit collect in the channel, and a quick seasonal cleaning keeps the drain taking water at full capacity.

A Regrade Changes Where the Water Goes in the First Place
Regrading reshapes the ground so water never heads toward the trouble spot at all. Where a drain manages water after it arrives, grading corrects the slope that sent it there: soil that settled beside the foundation, a lawn that pitches toward the patio, a low pocket with no outlet.
When the grades are wrong, regrading is usually the honest starting point. Pipe cannot overcome a surface that pitches the wrong way, and a drain installed in a yard with backwards pitch spends its whole service life fighting the slope.

Match the Symptom to the Fix
The lawn stays wet and spongy for days after rain: a French drain routed through the wet ground, discharged to a safe outlet.
Water runs across pavement into the garage, a walkway, or a patio: a trench drain across the path of the flow.
Puddles form in the same low spots after every storm: a regrade to remove the pockets, with a drain added if the spot has no downhill outlet.
Water stands against the foundation: regrade the ground beside the house so it falls away, and add a French drain along the wall if the soil stays loaded.

Every Fix Ends Somewhere
One test applies to all three options: ask where the water goes once the fix is in. A French drain and a trench drain both need an ending point that can take the flow, a downhill outlet, a dry well, or a pop-up emitter at the lawn. A regrade needs somewhere for the redirected water to travel, like a swale or an existing drain. A proposal that names the hardware but never names the discharge point is missing its most important detail, and pinning that down is the first thing we do on a site visit.
Most Real Yards Need a Combination
Textbook cases are rare. A typical Morris County lot has some settled grade near the house, a downspout or two discharging in the wrong place, and one genuinely wet zone out in the lawn. The right fix might be a modest regrade plus a French drain, or a trench drain tied into the same buried line that carries the downspouts. The pieces have to be designed together, because every one of them ends at a discharge point, and the discharge has to work for the whole system.
That is the case for having one crew look at the whole property instead of buying fixes one at a time.
